Koarmabar Personnel Cleaned Up Trashes along Item River

As many as 220 personnel of Navy’s Western Fleet (Koarmabar) and tens of Kemayoran Sub-District janitors held communal work along Item River, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (12/24). Using makeshift tools, they cleaned up the trashes and put them in gunny sacks.

Most of those trashes usually come from the locals. But when the water channels got clogged, they complained of flooding. That is not right

“Trash problem is not government’s responsibility only. Moreover, rainy season is coming, thus the trash piling up on the river can lead to flooding,” stated Acting Central Jakarta Mayor, Rustam Effendi.

Effendi said he is disappointed because many people are still throwing trash haphazardly, including into water channels and rivers. Such a thing will obviously cause problems, one of them is flooding.

“Most of those trashes usually come from the locals. But when the water channels got clogged, they complained of flooding. That is not right,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, Koarmabar Headquarter Detachment Commander, Marine Lt. Col. Arya Delano, hoped this communal work could minimize flood impacts caused by the clogging of water channels and rivers.

“To face flooding, we have prepared a flood post in Koarmabar and other aids,” he stated.
